HSU – Tubal patency test (HSU)

Clarity about your fertility baseline
At Freya Fertility we offer a professional test of your fallopian tubes’ patency – a key part of fertility evaluation if you wish to get pregnant or plan fertility treatment.

What is HSU?

HSU stands for Hystero-Salpingo-Ultrasonography – a gentle examination where we use ultrasound and a small contrast liquid to check whether at least one fallopian tube is open and functional.

This is crucial in fertility diagnostics because the egg must travel through the tube to meet sperm — either in a natural pregnancy or in treatments such as IUI.

Who is the test relevant for?

Women with prior pelvic infections such as chlamydia or gonorrhea

Women who have had previous abdominal or pelvic surgery, where scar tissue may affect patency

Women with endometriosis

Couples or singles who want certainty about tubal passage before starting fertility treatment

How it works – step by step

1. Booking

Schedule a time, typically early in your cycle (approx. day 5–10)

2. Preparation

3. The procedure

A thin plastic catheter is introduced into the uterus, contrast liquid is injected, and ultrasound checks tubal passage. The procedure takes about 5–10 minutes.

Does the test hurt?

Most experience only mild discomfort and possibly period-like cramping — duration 5–10 minutes.

Usually between cycle day 5 and 11 — after your period has ended but before ovulation.

We will review the result together and discuss what it means — and what treatment options you have.

The risk is very low. If you experience fever, pain or foul-smelling discharge after the test, contact us or your doctor immediately.
