TESA - testicular sperm aspiration

A direct option when sperm cells are not found in the semen.
TESA (Testicular Sperm Aspiration) is a method to retrieve sperm cells directly from the testicles when none are found in the semen sample. The procedure is always combined with ICSI.

When is TESA used?

TESA is relevant when:

TESA requires that the woman undergoes egg retrieval at the same time (as part of an IVF/ICSI process).

Safety and support throughout the process

We understand that a procedure on the male partner can create uncertainty. Our approach is respectful, informative, and caring – we walk you through the entire process and make sure you feel seen and safe.

Results and potential

TESA combined with ICSI is often the only solution when sperm cells cannot be found in the usual way. When the technique is successful, it can open the door to fertilisation and pregnancy, even in complex cases.

How a TESA process works

1. Timing in the cycle

TESA is typically performed on the same day as egg retrieval for the woman.

2. Minor surgery under local anaesthesia

Local anaesthesia, pain relief, and sedative medication are offered. A thin needle is inserted into the testicle and a small amount of tissue is aspirated. The procedure usually takes 15-30 minutes. Most men experience only mild discomfort.

3. Sperm extraction and ICSI

As only few sperm cells are usually retrieved, ICSI is always used to fertilise the eggs (one sperm cell is injected into each egg).

4. Recovery

The patient can leave the clinic after about an hour. There may be some soreness in the scrotum for a few days.
