TESA is used in case of:
TESA-treatment acquires an IVF-treatment with oocyte aspiration for the female. TESA is usually done the day before or the same day as the oocyte aspiration. Because the sperm count obtained by TESA is always low, micro insemination (ICSI) is always used for fertilizing the oocytes.
The sperm is taken directly from one of the testicles in a small surgical procedure in local anesthetics. If you wish, we can also cover the pain intravenously. A thin cannula is lead into the testicle and a small amount of the sperm producing tissue is sucked out. The sperm is found in the tissue. The scrotum will be sore a couple of days after the procedure. You can leave the clinic after approximately an hour.
It is possible, that no sperm is obtained by TESA. You should therefore decide, before the procedure is done, what to do if this happens. Should the aspirated oocytes be fertilized with semen from a donor, or not be used at all?
In less than 1% a hematoma on infection can occur. The symptoms are pain, swelling and fever, the treatment is antibiotics. Contact us or an emergency physician if you experience any of these symptoms.
